How does a chimney fire occur?
Chimney fire is caused by soot residues, also known as glossy or hard soot, being deposited on the walls of the chimney and igniting. The formation of these deposits has various causes. On the one hand, the burning of wrong or wet wood or too much fuel and a lack of air supply can be the cause. Over the years, this layer of soot becomes thicker and thicker until the entire inner walls are covered with a thick layer of tar. If heating is now done with fuel that generates a high temperature (e.g. conifers, wood briquettes), or if there is a strong air flow, the tar layer can ignite and the fireplace burns.
